SOMETHING ABOUT WAIST BEADS
Hello and welcome to my world of culture and tradition. My name is Afia and I have been wearing waist beads from birth. I remember my grandma used to buy them in different colors for my cousins and I. We were always so excited to get new ones.
WaistBeads are believed to help SHAPE your body (give you the hour glass figure), PROMOTES self love, self confidence in a woman and sexuality between spouses and most importantly PROTECT your FERTILITY as a woman in the Akan culture (that is why my grandma puts the beads on my lower hips right on where a woman’s womb sits.
Different colors mean different things in the Akan culture:
GREEN - Fertility, New Beginnings, Mother Earth, Food and Sustainability
PINK - Feminity, Womanhood, Self Love, Confidence
RED - Blood in our veins (LIFE), Vitality, Fire
WHITE - Purity, Joy, Hope, Soul
